The plaintiff alleged a 40-year non-marital relationship and that the firm’s client had entered into purported oral agreements establishing a domestic partnership. The plaintiff sought damages against the firm’s client for approximately one million dollars, including, but not limited to, lifetime financial support, equal division of assets, and a substantial portion of the client’s retirement savings.
After being retained, Akbar challenged the legal and factual basis of the claims and positioned the case in a posture most favorable to the firm’s client, which highlighted the opposing party’s risk of proceeding to trial.
After putting up a vigorous defense that applied pressure on the opposing party, the case ultimately resolved pursuant to a negotiated agreement. This required Wade Litigation’s client to pay just $75,000, which protected the client’s financial interests. The resolution included no admission of liability, no finding of any contractual or partnership relationship, no division of retirement assets, and no ongoing support obligations. All claims were dismissed with prejudice.
The resolution allowed the client to avoid the cost, uncertainty, and emotional burden of protracted litigation while securing the strongest possible outcome under the circumstances.
